“Green Power” refers to alternative energy that is renewable and pollution-free. This includes solar, hydro, and wind power.

Wind Turbines

The Mackinaw City Wind Power Project's first two wind turbine generators ("WTGs") went online in December of 2001. They stand 230 feet high, and have three 85-foot long blades each. They are located on the city's waste water treatment plant south of the Mackinaw Bridge. The turbines are manufactured by NEG Micon.

Emmet County and the Mackinaw City Council respectively prepared a Wind Turbine Zoning Ordinance and unanimously issued Permits for the Mackinaw Wind Power Project. The Planning and Zoning ("P&Z") Center, Inc. researched and published authoritative articles and guidance in the October-November, 2002 "Planning and Zoning News." All stakeholder groups are encouraged to read and take lessons from "Wind Power in Michigan," which sets forth the siting process, as recommended by the National Wind Coordinating Committee, and specific issues and websites.

Mark Wyckoff's editorial, "It's Time For Michigan To Welcome Wind Power" and the feature article on the Mackinaw City Project are "required reading." Finally, the Emmet County WTG Ordinance and related laws are provided. For copies of these definitive P&Z articles on Michigan and national energy use and policy choices, write the Planning and Zoning Center, Inc., 715 North Cedar, Lansing, MI 48906 (517/886-0564) or email Rich Vander Veen, rfv3@mackinawpower.com.
